An avalanche at California’s Lake Tahoe has killed at least eight skiers, with a ninth person missing and presumed dead.
The group of 15, including four guides, was descending Castle Peak when a large sheet of snow broke loose despite an avalanche watch being in effect.
Six people were rescued after sheltering overnight in treacherous conditions and using emergency beacons to call for help.
It is the deadliest avalanche in the United States in more than 40 years.
Al Jazeera’s Heidi Zhou-Castro reports.
